How to camp in the best way

In planning a camp, we must take into account many factors that will make us enjoy the experience more.

Nothing is missing for the summer and it is time to define where and how to spend a few days or weeks of walks and rest. The mountain, the sea, the coast receive thousands of adventurers who, backpack on their shoulders, prefer to live camping to have a deep contact with nature. And for those who is the first time undertake this type of travel, inexperience, trial and error, play a fundamental role in the assembly of a rural camp.

camp in the best way

In the first outings in tent, who did not place one in a terrain, for example, low or uneven, or in the shade of a tall tree without noticing that it could be easily breakable. Error is learned, of course, but it is never too easy to know some tips so that the first step is easier and the experience is better enjoyed.

Investigate about the destination

The start starts at home. Today from the living room and comfortably seated in an armchair we can find out everything about him or the destinations to visit and the routes to be made. For this reason, it is necessary to know the climatic characteristics of the place (average temperature, level of rains) and the terrain to internalize on the differences in levels, natural protections, geographical accidents, risk of flooding, etc. Also on the nearest services in case we decide to live the adventure away from any urban center: first aid, communications, security, transport, inhabitants in the vicinity, etc. This research will facilitate decision making.

When setting up a tent, be it of the igloo, Canadian or structural type, there are recommendations that coincide whatever the chosen environment for vacationing. For example, to find a flat spot where to place the tent, and to clean it to remove any branches or stones that can break the plastic floor and disturb the time to lie down. But that the site is even does not mean setting the camp on a low area or that we see it can be flooded: a high enough place and good water runoff is the only viable, although it means holding a minimum unevenness that maybe we can solve accommodating clothes on the floor to level the position at bedtime and thus achieve a good sleep.

The fire

The ignition of fire for cooking is not recommended: with the current gas or naphtha heaters we can avoid the risk of fires due to sparks or badly extinguished embers. But if you need to do it, first you have to dig a small well where you can put the firewood and clean the surroundings of any pasture or branches that could be ignited by carelessness, and assemble around the pit a stone floor on which the fireworks of the fire will fall. Water and then land ensure a correct shutdown, we should never let the fire die by itself.

Orient the entrance of the store in the opposite direction to the wind that usually runs in the area, is essential for comfort, although it represents giving “back” to the beautiful landscape. Also avoid digging the famous gutters around the tent: beyond how practical it is to keep the water circulating without slipping under the floor or entering the tent, today it is environmentally unacceptable. A motto reads: “Leave only your footprints”, and this is possible with the quality materials used in the manufacture of the stores, with roofs that reach to the ground and even form a skirt that can be covered with earth, sand or stones and thus seal any rain filtration.

In beach destinations, the most common is to camp in organized campsites. But there are also many who do away with the hustle and bustle and have large stretches of coast almost alone. They arrive by vehicle on nearby roads or paths with the advantage of carrying much of what is necessary in this type of camping, such as water, food and fuel for portable kitchens equipment.

The carp on the coast

To build the tent in these circumstances, you never have to do it on the beach itself: our coast is not characterized by the protection of geographical features, so you will always be exposed to the winds from the sea. The best, then, is to look for a good place behind fixed dunes that have a height that does not involve much effort in crossing it to come and go to the beach, or that has an easy exit to the coast by the sides. Also if there is a forest or a small forest (usually implanted) looking for its repair is convenient, although always taking care not to place the carp under a tall tree because the fall of a branch would be fatal for people or equipment, or under one that dismiss resins as tears, like the weeping willow always close to rivers and streams, as they damage the fabrics.

The last recommendation also applies to areas of the Litoral, mostly jungle and forest. This region is known for the abundance of insects, so reducing the risk of entering the store or taking refuge in our equipment is vital: establish the tent in a clearing (which does not necessarily have to be in the sun, because the shade of the surrounding trees can be projected on the camp) and cleaning the ground beyond the boundaries of the tent keeps bugs away. Of course you have to be careful to always close the door or the mosquito net of the tent, as well as having backpacks, bags, shoes and other things stored inside, or, if not possible, bagging them.

There are usually toxic or stinging plants on the Litoral. To know what they are and to avoid them, as with those animals (especially snakes and scorpions) that could bother in some way the normal development of a camping, about tranquility at the time of acting before any inconvenience.

Mountain environment

If we talk about setting up a camp in the mountains or the mountains, the care has to do with keeping a prudent distance from water courses that are often overflowed quickly in case of rain. It is relatively easy to distinguish how often the water grows, since in the surroundings there are signs (spots, hangovers, etc.) that facilitate the reading of the medium. Camp should never be set up in streams, large or small, because they are natural drains and even have rock and mud landslides.

To protect from the wind, the mountain offers a very favorable terrain design, with large rocks behind which we can build the tent, at the same time that according to the time of day will give a good shade. If the place did not have them, an alternative is to form with small and large stones a circle about 70 centimeters high around the store, in the old fashioned way of the real ones mounted by the baqueanos in the mountain range. Match the soil with sand, dirt or gravel is recommended because in addition to a good rest this ensures that in case of rain the water will find other levels where to run.

Keeping us away from tall, vertical or inclined walls, is an inviolable safety rule, although the place is strong and tempting because of the shade: winds and storms can cause dangerous or sliding water leaks.
